The Stations of the Cross at Kutay islet

Let me give you some more pictures which I took at Kutay Islet in Malajog. We are still looking for the name of the place, maybe we will later call it a shrine, monument or whatever. Anyway, work is being done to prepare the place for the blessing which will happen in two weeks' time.

On their toes are Jun and Nati Oben who, together with their generous friends came up with this 'big' project. Lately, the site has become popular with soon-to-weds as a venue for their pre-nuptial pictorials. And no need to mention about the beautiful sunsets that one can observe in the area.

This is also worth visiting (especially) during Holy Week with the 14 stations of the cross and other religious images in place. Let me warn you though, it's not easy getting through those steep steps at the islet.

Here are my pictures of the 14 stations of the cross.

work at the Kutay islet

We were with Jun Oben and Asner Dean at Kutay islet (in Malajog) today. Workers were busy putting on some finishing touches in preparation for its blessing which is set on September 4, 2010.

The main attraction of the place is the (more-than-life-size) image of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. Also in the area are the 14 stations of the cross, the Nativity Scene, the Archangels and the Resurrected Christ.

Bishop Isabelo Abarquez will lead the blessing. Invited to lead the ribbon-cutting are Rev. Fr. Roland Cajegas, Congressman Mel Sarmiento, Mayor Reynaldo Uy, and Vice Mayor Ronald Aquino, among others.

Here are some pictures I managed to take at the site.

Ian and Helen

Ian Chua Guarde and Helen Gilbang De Los Santos will get married today. Their wedding mass will be held at the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral with Fr. Iluminado Paulino as Mass Presider and Rev. Fr. Aries Miranda, OSC as concelebrant. Reception will be held at the Calbayog City Sports Center.

DYOG is 28 years old today

DYOG Radyo ng Bayan will turn 28 years old today. Let me give you a short history of the said station which I got from a report by Gina Sorillo when the station celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Sometime in 1982, then Maharlika Broadcasting System (MBS) under the Ministry of Information established a radio station here in Calbayog City. It was officially given the call sign of DYJR, as in, Jumbo Radio, at 882 khz at the AM broadcast band.

With a full power of 10,000 watts, it provided wider radio signal coverage than any other radio station operating in the island of Samar, reaching as far as the island-provinces of Masbate, Leyte, parts of Cebu, Bicol, Iloilo, Negros, Agusan and Surigao.

In July of the same year, DYJR started its test broadcast and was officially opened on August 21. In attendance were Minister of Information Gregorio CendaƱa, Deputy Prime Minster and Minister of Local Government Jose RoƱo, MBS Director Rafael Dante Cruz, NMPC RD Wilmar Lucero, City Mayor Ricardo Tan, and other local officials.

In 1985, there were changes in the staff. Mar Tenedero was transferred to another sister station, Alan Diomangay became the Station Manager, Tony Pueblos moved up as Radio Production Supervisor. By October of the same year, Sherry Maderazo resigned and a field correspondent from Office of Media Affairs RO8, Elena “Eleen” Lim took over.

In 1986, just after the People Power Revolution, major changes occurred. The government shifted from Parliamentary to Presidential, the Ministry of Information became Department of Information and Maharlika Broadcasting System became Philippine Broadcasting Service.

In 1988 to 1989, the Department of Information became the Office of the Press Secretary, with Tomas “Buddy” Gomez III at its helm. Major changes occurred, affecting the station.

There was also a re-shuffling of the staff. Some were transferred, some resigned, others were re-assigned, while a new batch came in to fulfill the PBS mission to serve as a credible channel of information, a true public forum, and a persuasive agent of social change and development.

As they fulfill their mission, the Philippine Broadcasting Service shall also work for their vision to be the leading public network committed and responsive to its national and international audiences.

Manned by service-driven and competent personnel and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and technology, PBS shall champion what is relevant in any specific area of service for the benefit of the greatest number of people and the development of the nation.

it still happens

Forget about buong barangay on hand to send-off or meet a family member, it happens in other parts of the country, and it happens in my old hometown. I was at the Calbayog airport earlier today to meet my mother who flew in from her vacation in the land of the Chinese (now I'm drooling or maybe it's more like green with envy). Anyway, I used to do it when I was young (and that's at least three decades ago); and together with some well-wishers (how do you call those who are on hand to meet an arriving passenger?), I did it again - at the "chicken wire" fence on the right side of the airport terminal, I waited and watched the aircraft land and stop in front of the arrival gate. Whew! it still happens eh? Nice weekend everyone!

siday

Let me give something I got from a blog follower named Billy Genotiva.

Lalo’t makatagpo Kumpanyang mayaman
Kaysarap sumahod lalo’t buwan-buwan
Subalit ang malas sikmura’y kakalam.

Meron naman ibang kung inyong titingnan
Na kung umaasta ay puno ng yaman
Pawang dekorasyon ang buong katawan
Ngunit sa kabila ay puno ng utang.

Meron namang nais sa lungkot umiwas
Hanap ay kaibigan para may kausap
Nagpupunta ng bar babae ang hanap
Nasa isang sulok, paisa-isang shot.

Habang nasa disco mata ay balisa
Kislap ng dagitab nakakasorpresa
Lalapitan ang chicks agad pakilala
“I love you Sweetheart” susuportahan kita.

Biglang nagka-krisis itong buong mundo

Walang ibang dala kundi kanyang suot
Habang bumababa si Pare sa airport
Panay pangugutya ang kanyang inabot…

Kaya kaibigan kung mangibang bayan
Kuwento ni Pare’y di dapat tularan
Ang lahat ng tukso ay dapat iwasan
Upang makamit mo ang kinabukasan…

the celebrity hound with Jaime Bautista

Who the hell is Jaime Bautista? Well, he is none other than the President of Philippine Airlines (PAL). Mr. Bautista was in the news recently, thanks to PAL's row with some of its pilots. I remember meeting Mr. Bautista when I emceed the PAL Express program at the Calbayog Airport on April 15, 2008. The program was graced by no less than President President Gloria Arroyo. I dug and my files and here it is, the pix of the celebrity hound (read: me) with Mr. Bautista and PGMA.
