Bo's Coffee will formally open today. Blessing and brunch is set at 10:00 a.m. Bo's Calbayog is located along Umbria Street, Calbayog City. In case you have a hard time knowing where that street is, the establishment is located in front of the old building which used to house the Calbayog Chinese School.

Here are some pictures I took when I visited the place yesterday.

Now open: South Star Drug

There's a new drugstore in town. South Star Drug recently opened shop in Calbayog. It is located on on the corner of Rueda Street and Magsaysay Boulevard. Yup, it's the same address (or should I say street corner) where Mercury Drug (the one which also sells groceries) is located. From what I heard, it seems like the corporate credo of South Star is something which says "where Mercury is, there we will be".

My apologies for the quality of the pictures, I used my tab to take these.

Bottled sardines from Calbayog

Yes, you read it right. A local cooperative has begun producing bottled sardines that is proudly Calbayog-made. This product is called "Biatungan Spicy Sardines". Biatungan Multi-Purpose Cooperative is one of the successful coops in Calbayog. The bottled sardines is their latest venture which is made possible through a tie-up with some agencies among which is the Ramon Lentejas Memorial School of Fisheries.

The "Tamban" fish is sourced locally. The bottle is from Cebu (yes, it's not recycled from empty bottles of other products) and what makes the production cost kinda on the high side is the use of pure corn oil.

Biatungan MPC is located in Tinambacan Poblacion and can be reached at phone number (+63 55) 209-73-82 / 209-72-53.

Grandtours opens new terminal

There's a new addition to the changing skyline of Calbayog. Grandtours formally opened its new terminal today. It is located along Senate President Avelino Avenue in Brgy. West Awang, on the lot where the Balay Darangpan used to stand.

If there is something else worth noting, a good number of Calbayognons have noticed that the place near the terminal seemed to have been transformed into a commercial area. A good number of food joints have sprouted (yup including the tapsilogan I mentioned in an earlier blogpsost), two bakeries opened shop. And do I have to mention the usual "irignuman"? And before I forget, the area also has a funeral parlor, three vulcanizing shops, a water purification shop and a pension house.

There's a new Tapsilogan in town

It's the foodie (read: mahilig kumaun) in me that's doing this blog post. I drove around with a friend earlier tonight and then our hunger pang brought us to this new joint in town. The name of the food joint says it all, it serves among other stuff, the ubiquitous Sinangag and Itlog with whatever you fancy. Yup, it's a hole in the wall, no pretensions. You get to eat either by the counter, yup in front of the crew or on the tables set be the highway, yes i said highway as this is located along Senate President Avelino Avenue where all those trucks, vans, motorbikes and what have you ply as they pass through Calbayog. And as if the noise of the vehicles is not enough, add in the noise of work being done in the vulcanizing shop next to Silogan Express.

So much for the ambiance. My verdict? I will visit the place again. The quality of the food is worth the price. The spoon and fork and the plate are not greasy and they served mineral water. And most importantly, I got something which I did not expect: the crew was courteous. They greeted us "good evening" and said "thank you" when we left.

Calbayog Entrepreneurs

Nothing much about this blog post. It's not about any chismis or something like that. Mana Chat (Gonzaga) gave me 3 packs of KL Banana Chips and I liked it. What made it more interesting is that this is locally made, yes in one the barangays in Oquendo District.

an belen sa Rural Bank

Aside from CKC, there is another institution - a financial institution - which has the Nativity Scene as its Christmas decor. For the past few Christmases, Rural Bank of Calbayog has the "belen" installed (am I using the right term?) in front of the bank premises.

coffee and pizza at Ciriaco

Ciriaco Hotel is now open to the public. It's more of a soft opening 'coz the Presidential Suite, the pool and the spa are still under construction. A few days ago we tried their resto "Cafe Elsa". We settled for coffee and pizza. They have the usual machiatto, cafe latte, capuccino, expresso, etc. What caught my attention that night was their three-layer coffee (chocolate syrup, coffee and milk). I would learn that this is an "exclusive" product of the genesis hotel chain and the bistro resto groups (read: Italliani's TGIF, etc.); and it's the "most pricey" coffee on the menu. How much? Let's put it at over 100 pesos. The pizza had a generous sprinkling of mushroom and cheese. I am no pizza person so no judgement on that. As to the three-layer coffee, it was kinda sweet for me so I decided I had to settle for the reliable cafe americano or cafe mocha on my next visit. So how was it? If you are into a cool, quiet and well-lighted place for your dinner or snacks, then Cafe Elsa is for you.

sorry cupid

Or maybe it's more like Dangwa sa Calbayog, I mean the title of today's blog post.

One get to see this only twice a year, Valentines' Day and you don't have to guess, All Soul's Day. of course for Valentine's Day it's more elaborate you know (oops sorry Manny Pacquiao), the arrangement, not to mention more expensive flowers, and the ribbons, and the card, and chocolate, and everything else in between.

I took these pictures earlier today. These vendors set up shop in front of the UCPB building along Gomez street and at the public marker. It was super hot then when the sun was shining bright and was bent on coloring my skin dark. Well, about an hour later until this moment, it's been raining giving the promise of a wet all saints' and souls' days celebration. Now, did I tell you that some areas in the cemetery get flooded during heavy rains? Oh well . . .

Gaisano is coming to town

It's official, Gasiano is set to build a mall in Calbayog. The City Mayor said this during a presscon earlier today. Negotiations are still ongoing though. On top of the things to do would be the completion of the Market and Bus Terminal Complex in Barangay Bagacay and the transfer of the present stall holders at the old Public market.
