Or maybe it's more like Dangwa sa Calbayog, I mean the title of today's blog post.

One get to see this only twice a year, Valentines' Day and you don't have to guess, All Soul's Day. of course for Valentine's Day it's more elaborate you know (oops sorry Manny Pacquiao), the arrangement, not to mention more expensive flowers, and the ribbons, and the card, and chocolate, and everything else in between.

I took these pictures earlier today. These vendors set up shop in front of the UCPB building along Gomez street and at the public marker. It was super hot then when the sun was shining bright and was bent on coloring my skin dark. Well, about an hour later until this moment, it's been raining giving the promise of a wet all saints' and souls' days celebration. Now, did I tell you that some areas in the cemetery get flooded during heavy rains? Oh well . . .

Wilfredo "Tonchi" Cui, Jr. and Yvonne Mae "Mayenne" Ygbuhay will get married today. Bishop Isabelo Abarquez will preside over their wedding mass at the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Concelebrating with him are Fr. Mar Tubac, ofm and Fr. Noel Lavendia. Reception will be held at the Calbayog Cultural and Convention Center.

I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come, I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

At my first defence no one took my part; all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the word fully, that all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Larget greenhouse project inaugurated in Calbayog City

The Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Office No. 8 recently turned over to the Diocese of Calbayog through the Diocesan Social Action Center (SAC) the Greenhouse Facility Project located in Barangay Limarayun, Calbayog City. The project is the biggest so far in Region 8.

Rest in Peace Fr. Baby

Rev. Fr. Guillermo Yabao of Fr. Baby was laid to rest last October 14, 2010. The funeral mass was held at the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral with Bishop Isabelo Abarquez as presider.

15th World Teachers' Day

DepEd Calbayog observed World Teachers' Day about two weeks ago. It was indeed a day to honr teacehrs in Calbayog. Mayor Reynaldo Uy took time to give a handwritten letter and a gift to his favorite teacher Mrs. Tersita Lucero. Students from the various public schools gave various intermission numbers for their teachers.

Il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI ha accettato la rinuncia al governo pastorale dell’arcidiocesi metropolitana di Cebu (Filippine), presentata dall’Em.mo Card. Ricardo J. Vidal, in conformità al can. 401 § 1 del Codice di Diritto Canonico.

Il Papa ha nominato Arcivescovo Metropolita di Cebu (Filippine) S.E. Mons. Jose Serofia Palma, finora Arcivescovo Metropolita di Palo.

S.E. Mons. Jose Serofia Palma

S.E. Mons. Jose Serofia Palma è nato a Dingle, nell'arcidiocesi di Jaro, il 19 marzo 1950. Ha svolto gli studi filosofici presso il St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary e quelli teologici presso il St. Joseph Regional Seminary. Ha poi conseguito la Licenza in S. Teologia all'Università St. Tomaso di Manila, e il Dottorato presso la Pontificia Università San Tommaso d'Aquino a Roma.

È stato ordinato sacerdote per l'arcidiocesi di Jaro il 21 agosto 1976.

Dopo un anno come Vicario parrocchiale alla Cattedrale di Jaro, è stato insegnante ed educatore presso il St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary e poi è diventato Rettore del St. Joseph Regional Seminary. Nel frattempo ha ricoperto anche vari incarichi in diverse commissioni diocesane. Nel 1997 è stato Parroco presso la Parrocchia di Sant'Antonio di Padova a Jaro.

Nominato il 28 novembre 1997, dal Papa Giovanni Paolo II, Vescovo titolare di Vazari Didda e Ausiliare di Cebu, è stato consacrato il 13 gennaio 1998. Il 13 gennaio 1999 è stato trasferito alla Sede di Calbayog.

Il 18 marzo 2006 è stato promosso Arcivescovo Metropolita di Palo. Dal 1° dicembre 2009 è Vice-Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale delle Filippine.

The Most Reverend José Serofio Palma, DD, PhD has been appointed as the new archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cebu by Pope Benedict XVI in an announcement made by the Vatican two hours ago. He will be replacing Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal whose retirement was finally accepted by the pope after four years. Cardinal Vidal submitted his resignation when he turned 75, the mandatory retirement age for Catholic bishops, on February 6, 2006.

Archbishop Palma had previously served the Archdiocese of Palo in Leyte. Palma, 60, was born on March 19, 1950 at Dingle, Iloilo. He was ordained priest on August 21, 1976. Appointed auxiliary bishop of Cebu on November 28, 1997, he was later on transferred to the Diocese of Calbayog after which he was appointed archbishop of Palo on March 18, 2006. He is also currently the vice-president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

The Archdiocese of Cebu was founded on August 14, 1595 as a suffragan diocese of Manila. Its first prelate was the Augustinian friar Pedro de Agurto. As a diocese, it had the most extensive territory which stretched up to the Marianas. On April 28, 1934 it was elevated into an archdiocese with Gabriel Reyes as the first archbishop.

Happy Birthday Calbayog!

Calbayog City will celebrate her 62nd birthday today. Mayor Reynaldo Uy and the City Officials will lead the various activities slated for the celebration which will have Congressman Mel Senen Sarmiento as the guest of honor.

The official events actually started last Wednesday, October 13, 2010 with the annual Search for Miss Anyag. Last Thursday, October 14, 2010, Mayor Uy, Vice Mayor Ronald Aquino and the city officials joined the members of the Calbayog PD-Cab Drivers’ Association during their annual PD Cab Drivers’ Day celebration.

Yesterday’s events included the Charter Day Parade and the Ismayling, Siday & Kuratsa (ISK) Competitions.

Today’s events will include a Thanksgiving Mass at the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral. It will be followed by a Flag-Raising ceremony in front of the City Hall, afterwhich Mayor Uy will deliver his Charter Day message.

Two flagship projects of the Tri-District (3-D) Development Program of the City of Calbayog will be launched after the flag-ceremony. These are the Aguit-itan Development Project in Barangay Aguit-itan and the Calbayog City Hospital at Sitio Talahib in Barangay Trinidad.

A Program will also be held at the Calbayog LGU-SOS Family Training Center (CLSFTC), this is the former CKC-Herman Gmeiner Elementary School Campus in Barangay Dagum. A Memorandum of Agreement between the City of Calbayog and SOS Calbayog will be signed by Mayor Uy and Congressman Sarmiento (in his capacity as SOS Calbayog President) to formally put in place the CLFTC which will cater to out-of-school youth, unemployed men and women. It will serve as a venue for trainings for small engine repairs, baking, welding, horticulture, hairdressing, sewing, cosmetology and other TESDA-accredited courses.

The day’s other highlight is the Inauguration of the spanking Calbayog Cultural & Convention Center (CCCC). The inauguration program will include the messages of Congressman Mel Senen Sarmiento, Mayor Reynaldo Uy and Vice Mayor Ronaldo Aquino. Also on hand is the performance of “Pag-Ilawod”, a musicale on Calbayog History. The performance will include the city officials as part of the cast. After Dinner the City will give out SP Resolutions and Plaques of Commendation to special awardees. The employees’ night and awarding of LGU Olympics winners will cap the event.

This year’s celebration is anchored on the theme: “Determinasyon: Dalan ngadto san Dayun nga Kauswagan”

Finishing touches are being put in place for the big day - the CCCC inauguration during the 62nd Calbayog Charter Day Anniversary. And that's exactly a week from now.
