Aside from the Lenten messages of TV and radio, there is something else which serves as a reminder that it's Holy Week, kumbaga nahi-araan. It's the presence of some enterprising Calbayognons who "set shop" in the vicinity of the Cathedral to sell their palms in time for well, Palm Sunday. And yes, I saw them again earlier today, and yes, I was reminded (again) that it's Holy Week.

As the City Hall stage was readied for tonight's Earth Hour event . . . 

. . . some enterprising Calbayognons have already on display their wares for the faithful's use during the Palm Sunday service.

One thing (very nice) I noticed, these people easily give you a smile.

Bottled sardines from Calbayog

Yes, you read it right. A local cooperative has begun producing bottled sardines that is proudly Calbayog-made. This product is called "Biatungan Spicy Sardines". Biatungan Multi-Purpose Cooperative is one of the successful coops in Calbayog. The bottled sardines is their latest venture which is made possible through a tie-up with some agencies among which is the Ramon Lentejas Memorial School of Fisheries.


The "Tamban" fish is sourced locally. The bottle is from Cebu (yes, it's not recycled from empty bottles of other products) and what makes the production cost kinda on the high side is the use of pure corn oil.

Starting 'em young

There are kids, and there are kids. Whew! What am I saying? 'Neway, there are kids who go to school and there are kids who settle with being at home "para san mga sugo nira nanay ug tatay". And  I hope those kids who go around begging are not doing it upon the instruction of nanay or tatay. And that brings me to that bunch of kids whose pix I took last November 2, yes when we took time to visit our dear departed. They were among those who took time to sell candles. When we asked them what they intend to do with their earning, "balun pag iskwela" was the answer. And there was one kid who sold something different. It's something which looked like flowers arranged in a way that one can use it to decorate well, the tomb of one's dear departed. What made it unique is that it was made of straw, yes straw which one uses to sip soft drink or any drink for that matter. Now, that's what I'll call being resourceful and entrepreneurial. And that's one thing I won't mind seeing our kids do or display, young as they may be.

 

It's that other day of the year again

Move over cupid! It's still months to Valentine's Day, but some portions of Calbayog got colorful today with the flower vendors on hand with theirs stuff for well, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. More than making the city colorful, it's nice to note how a good number of Calbayognon manifest their entrepreneurial spirit on occasions like this.

Nothing much about this blog post. It's not about any chismis or something like that. Mana Chat (Gonzaga) gave me 3 packs of KL Banana Chips and I liked it. What made it more interesting is that this is locally made, yes in one the barangays in Oquendo District.

Calbayog Hotels and Restaurants Association inducts new set of officers

The Calbayog Hotels and Restaurants Association (CAHORA) inducted their new set of officers today. The event was held at the function hall of Marju-Krisel Resort in Brgy. San Policarpo. Guest of Honor and Inducting Officer was Vice Mayor Ronaldo Aquino.

Inducted as officers were Mark Aquino of Marju Krisel Resort (President); Dr. Vincent Rosales of 3-Gems (Vice President); Irene Pastrana of Mila's (Secretary); Eleanor Bernardo - Tingzon of Bernardo's (Secretary); Ruth Bartolome - Enriquez of Mangroove (Auditor); and Evageline Kho of Eduardo's and Lina Porcalla - Pido of Lyn's Garden (Business Managers).

Happy Valentine's Day

It's a rainy Valentine's Day for everyone. I dunnow about you (and at the risk of being called frigid), this is one day of the year which I don't look forward to. Well, that's not the case for a good number of Calbayognons. It's midday and the local florists are doing good. The same thing with some local bakehops who are raking money in with their packages which consisted of either brownies or mini cakes and balloons or stuffed toys. Deliveries? Yes. But there was one friend I know who sent roses for his wife but the delivery boy got lost so my friend had to deliver the roses himself. So what about the pictures below? This vendor was enterprising enough to realize that with the rain is determined to dampen (literally) hearts, err people full of love today. She decided to carry her stuff to one of the places where there is heavy flow of people and will assure her of income today. Where else but the City Hall entrance. Ah, l'amour!
